Micro soldering 101 (video course)

Micro soldering 101 (video course)

In Micro soldering 101, we will go over the basic basics, you will be familiarized with core concepts and proper theory to guide you through more advanced repair technique in the future. I'm really proud of everyone who is taking the steps to learn something new and different. Even if you are not pursuing end-level soldering skills this guide as well as the rest of this wiki should be able to take you where you need to be with confidence.

Micro soldering 101 - Introduction to the Class

In Microsoldering 101, we will go over the basic basics, you will be familiarized with core concepts and proper theory to guide you through more advanced repair technique in the future. Im really proud of everyone who is taking the steps to learn something new and different. Even if you are not pursuing end-level soldering skills this guide as well as the rest of this wiki should be able to take you where you need to be with confidence.

First thing First - The difference between Microsoldering and Board Level Diagnostics

Before we begin, id like to take a moment to distinguish the difference between Microsoldering and Board Level Diagnostics.

While both are adjacent skills in the great skill tree of life, they are different skills with different learning curves that must be combined to become an effective board repair technician. Without both skills, you will forever fall into the plzbro pit of dispair. This is a place that's hard to get out of and sucks in technicians year after year until they are 20 year techs that have no clue.

In this class, you will learn the soldering skills needed to work at a microscopic level, not diagnose a shorted capacitor.

Help yourself, by helping yourself.

All classes begin with learning how to help yourself. This type of training can be applied to any other skill in your life you want to learn.

Its important that you are able to search online properly, so please familiarize yourself with this free online google search course that will show you how to leave no stone unturned in your quest for knowledge. https://coursebuilder.withgoogle.com/sample/course

Let's Begin

This course assumes you have familiarized yourself with the tools sections of the wiki and come ready.

Tool Reminder

If you are still looking for the proper tools, please reference the level 3 tool reference page.

The following is a forever work in progress and will change as time goes by, videos and lessons will change to better suit for the times or for overall course unity.

Expanding list of thoughts you should hear or have before you use your gear!

Video Lesson

What is Micro Soldering | Where we we fit into the universe of metal joining?

In Production

Touching and Feeling your board | How to Properly Handle your PCB

In Production

The Shakes | How to Control Shaky hands during Microsoldering.

No matter your age, when you start working in the microscope, your bound to understand quickly that the tolerances and movements of your hand's natural shake might cause you to do unintented things, learning to overcome this as best as you can before you begin work can really make you feel like you can do this!

What are we doing? | What makes rework and repair so complicated.

In Production

If your not Fluxin, you're not Soldering. Its that simple.

Which Solder Alloy do I use for Microsoldering are Plastic Ranges and Eutectic Points?

In the beginning, its hard to understand what all the differences are in solder and why you should choose one

over another. For this mini lesson, we will discuss this as well as what plastic ranges and eutectic points are as well as their mega importance in your alloy choice!

Calm Down with the low melt alloy | Soldering Crutches

Now that you have learned that there are difference types of solder, i'ts important to look at a common pitfall of newer solderers, relying or using low melt alloy in their daily work! Take a moment to listen and heed my warning about this very application-specific soldering alloy.

The Thermodynamics of Microsoldering. What do I Set my Hot air station to?

This one is a doosey, get your notepads out and pay attention, because we are going over the main thermodynamics of soldering in this lesson. If you focus in this one, everything else in M101 will be yours for the learning! After this you should understand or at least be slightly confident in setting your soldering or hot air station to some sort of temp. A cool thing to do now would be to go and see what other channels are showing and see how their temps show their own personal style of soldering soldering and hot air stations temp based on what you see on other channels as well as what you learned yours for the learning!

How to aim your Hot Air Properly | Aim is SUPER IMPORTANT

So with your head brimming with new information you feel like it couldn't get any more intense, well,

your wrong, now that you have been introduced into the high energy world of soldering, it's important to learn how to aim that energy so you do your work and not create more work for someone else on accident!

Understanding Thermal Linkage from Tip to Joint

Being able to see what it means to "choose the biggest joint for the job" in this lesson is a crucial key in your quest to effortlessly decide the best route for your solder job so that you don't destroy expensive micro points needlessly.

Surface Tension | Hot Air Rework Fundimentals | How do I get my parts to "jump" into place?

Its exciting to learn the crazy secrets you see on YouTube and in shops around the world such as the magical jumping components trick, the best part about this video, is that if you have been paying attention up until now, the video demonstration will be sweet music that will just have you pumped up and ready to jump directly into Microsoldering 102 where you get to actually work on stuff with your brand new knowledge!

The Gravity Method

Gravity keeps us grounded. =)

A practical look at using gravity to assist you during some of your component harvesting operations. Works great on a wide variety of components that are not glued to the board such as small 1-3 Jointed components, or even BGA and Connectors!
